Unlike in major urban centres with robust independent film cultures and large queer communities, queer films were seldom, if ever, screened at the local cinemas of small Prairie cities before the early 1970s. Faced with the costs of shipping films to their communities, queer activists had to be creative if they wanted to bring in films and videos from across Canada and the world. At a time when couture designers are being called out for their appropriative practices, the work of fashion line NORBLACK NORWHITE is a lesson in ethical partnership building. NBNW — described as part anthropological experiment, part art and part fashion — is inspired by everything from ancient Indian textile design to Michael Jackson. It was created by Toronto-raised designers Mriga Kapadiya and Amrit Kumar after they decided to leave their jobs in corporate advertising and move to India.

Before entering the school, Taeyoung studied Visual Communication at Yonsei University and studied Mass Communication and Journalism and Political Science at Kyung Hee University from South Korea. Susan holds a Bachelor of Commerce degree and a Master’s degree in Communications, is the author of numerous industry reports and publications and has lectured on creative industry policy for both Simon Fraser University and the University of British Columbia. Philippe Tousignant has 20 years of experience working for the Canadian federal service. Over the course of his career, he has held positions with the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission and Health Canada. He is currently the Director of Planning, Research and Reporting with the CRTC where he is responsible for overseeing the publication of the annual Communications Monitoring Report and co-sponsoring, with the Canadian Communication Association, the CRTC Prize for Excellence in Policy Research.
Her research focuses on the protection and promotion of the diversity of cultural expressions, and she is particularly interested in the implementation of cultural rights in the digital environment. Emmanuel attended McMaster’s Masters of Communication and New Media program where he researched topics in privacy, copyright, and legal philosophy. Currently, he works in copyright compliance with a digital storytelling platform in hopes to apply his research to compliance practice. Amanda Oye is a recent graduate of the Joint Graduate Program in Communication & Culture at York University. Her research interests include broadcast policy, public service broadcasting and journalism. David Skinner is an Associate Professor in the Department of Communication Studies at York University. He has a long standing interest in various forms of public media and is working on a book about the historical relationships between the CBC and private capital.
The reform introduced a standard that required platforms to give news outlets advance notification of algorithm changes if it affected referral traffic to news content. Other interventions address algorithmic distribution from the perspective of media diversity. Both Germany and Australia also have introduced non-discrimination requirements that requires platforms that are deemed large enough to not unfairly discriminate between news outlets .
Canadian broadcasting is expected to represent multicultural and multiracial diversity through programming and employment, as stipulated in the 1991 Broadcasting Act. But what does diversity mean for Canadian broadcasting, specifically the governance of diversity? This presentation reviews the CRTC’s definition of ‘cultural diversity’ and explores some of the related policies and parlonsdroits.ca policy documents produced in the practice of governance. The focus of this review is on how these documents interpret and articulate cultural diversity, not on the effectiveness of outcomes, to explore the underlying position of stakeholders on cultural diversity. In an increasingly digital world, right-wing Indian mainstream media are taking an increasing interest in incorporating SNS as a standard communication strategy in an attempt to instill their muscular Hindu nationalism onto wider audiences. In particular, an adaptation of Twitter by right-wing news media outlets is noteworthy. While many of the Indian right-wing news channels use Twitter on a regular basis to spur audiences to stay in tune with any potentially breaking news, to get engaged with them and/or to follow the regular updates, Twitter is being increasingly used to amplify Hindu nationalist propaganda. The news media experience dramatic shift in their business model, which leads them to inciting polarization, too.
Queer Cultural Center promotes social justice and the artistic and financial development of queer art and culture. Tyrone Boucher is an organizer, facilitator, and artist currently based in Austin, Texas. He is a self-taught printmaker and illustrator whose work is inspired by queer resilience, collective liberation, interdependence, social justice movements, and community. Social media platforms have repeatedly insisted that they are not publishers. Marxist social media critics like Tiziana Terranova and Christian Fuchs agree – they’re not publishers; they’re employers. As social media users we are workers, like golden geese in vast user-generated-content farms. Later, I locked myself in a dog cage in a public space for six hours as part of Dublin Live Art Festival. I also attended Abortion Rights Campaign Ireland on September 27,2014, and marched with 5000 people to support Irish women.

In terms of their musical journeys, Zinta started playing music when she was quite young, earning her chops at the piano and eventually the guitar. She started writing songs within a year of playing guitar starting with the acoustic and moving towards an electric sound. As for Kate, she started with the guitar on and off, playing in a riot grrl cover band at fundraisers for Rock Camp for Girls, an initiative that both Kate and Zinta hold in very high esteem. Through taking part in cover bands, Kate was reminded of the greatness of playing music with others. She then decided to try her hand at playing the bass for Ruff Talons and looks towards pop punk bass lines that are complex as well as the band Jawbreaker for inspiration. As for Zinta, she describes her songwriting as being based in how the personal is political, crush songs, straight up fun, and cute love songs.
The increasing influence of algorithms has brought the question of algorithmic bias to prominent attention. If the data we generate to power the algorithms captures our prejudices, then it is little surprise that algorithms themselves reproduce those same prejudices. Worse still, at the moment most algorithms are blackboxs, leaving this bias hidden. This panel, led by Ira Wagman , will be focused around the various ways different actors engage with the institutions that regulate broadcasting in Canada. However, there are other interfaces with the policy apparatus that are worth considering, including those from the world of advocacy, multicultural broadcasting, and other components in the Canadian media landscape.
Since arriving at UTM in 2017, his research has focussed on describing and understanding what he calls «Multicultural Toronto English», an emergent variety spoken by young people across the Greater Toronto Area. His research looks at the past, present and future of Canadian English and the various influences on linguistic innovation among young people.
